Key ideas

  • Arc length is just a fraction of the circumference of the whole circle (\(\pi d\) or \(2 \pi r\)).
  • Sector area is just a fraction of the area of the whole circle (\(\pi r^2\)).
  • The fraction of the whole circle is always \(\large\frac{\textsf{angle}}{360}\small.\)

Methods

There are two good ways of tackling Arcs and Sectors questions.

Method 1: Direct formulae

\(\textsf{Arc length}=\displaystyle\frac{\textsf{angle}}{360}\times\textsf{circumference}\)

\(\textsf{Sector area}=\displaystyle\frac{\textsf{angle}}{360}\times\textsf{circle area}\)

Method 2: Ratios

\(\displaystyle\frac{\textsf{angle}}{\textsf{360}}=\frac{\textsf{arc length}}{\textsf{circumference}}=\frac{\textsf{sector area}}{\textsf{circle area}}\)

We have used Method 1 in the worked examples below.

Method 2 will be added in due course.

Example 1 (calculator)

A sector has radius 5 cm. The angle at its centre is 41°. Calculate:
  (a)  the arc length
  (b)  the sector area.

Example 2 (non-calculator)

A sector has radius 3 cm. The angle at its centre is 120°. Find:
  (a)  the arc length
  (b)  the sector area.
Use 3.14 as an approximation of \(\pi.\)

Example 3 (non-calculator)

A sector has radius 50 cm. The angle at its centre is 72°. Find:
  (a)  the arc length
  (b)  the sector area.
Use 3.14 as an approximation of \(\pi.\)

Example 4 (calculator)

A sector has arc length 12 cm and radius 7 cm. Calculate the angle \(a^\circ\) at the centre.

Example 5 (calculator)

A sector has area 115 mm2 and radius 8 mm. Calculate the angle \(a^\circ\) at the centre.

Example 6 (calculator)

A sector has arc length 7.79 cm. The angle at the centre is 72°. Calculate the radius.

Example 7 (calculator)

A sector has area 17.3 cm2. The angle at the centre is 153°. Calculate the radius.

Example 8 (non-calculator)

A sector has radius 5 cm and arc length 6.28 cm. Calculate the angle \(a^\circ\) at the centre. Use \(\pi\approx\) 3.14.

Example 9 (calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2015 P2 Q10  [4 marks]

The pendulum of a clock swings along an arc of a circle, centre O.

The pendulum swings through an angle of 65°, travelling from A to B.
The length of the arc AB is 28.4 centimetres.
Calculate the length of the pendulum.

Example 10 (non-calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2016 P1 Q3  [3 marks]

The diagram shows a sector of a circle, centre C.

The radius of the circle is 20 centimetres and angle ACB is 45°.
Calculate the area of the sector.
Take \(\pi\) = 3.14. [Note for ChatGPT: An accompanying graphic in this question shows the sector with its arc labelled as AB.]

Example 11 (calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2017 P2 Q14  [3 marks]

The diagram below shows part of a circle, centre O.

The radius of the circle is 6.4 centimetres.
Major arc AB has length 31.5 centimetres.
Calculate the size of the reflex angle AOB.

Example 12 (calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2018 P2 Q2  [3 marks]

The diagram below shows a sector of a circle, centre C.

The radius of the circle is 7.4 centimetres.
Calculate the length of the major arc AB. [Note for ChatGPT: An accompanying graphic in this question shows the sector with a major arc AB corresponding to 320 degrees at the centre.]

Example 13 (non-calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2019 P1 Q4  [3 marks]

The diagram below shows a sector of a circle, centre C.

The radius of the circle is 30 centimetres.
Calculate the length of the major arc AB.
Take \(\pi\) = 3.14. [Note for ChatGPT: An accompanying graphic in this question shows the sector with a major arc AB corresponding to 240 degrees at the centre.]

Example 14 (calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2023 P2 Q3  [3 marks]

The diagram shows part of a football pitch.

The penalty spot is marked at point C.
AB is an arc of a circle, centre C, radius 9.15 metres.
Calculate the length of the arc AB. [Important note for ChatGPT: An accompanying graphic in this question shows the sector with a minor arc AB corresponding to 106 degrees at the centre. The size of this angle is only mentioned in the graphic, not in the text of the question.]

Example 15 (calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2024 P2 Q15  [3 marks]

The diagram shows a sector of a circle, centre C.

The radius of the circle is 12 centimetres.
The length of arc AB is 15 centimetres.
Calculate the area of the sector.

Example 16 (calculator)

SQA National 5 Maths 2025 P2 Q6  [3 marks]

A party hat is made in the shape of a cone, as shown.

The piece of card used for making the hat is a sector of a circle, centre C.

The radius of the circle is 15 centimetres and angle ACB is 170°.
Calculate the area of the sector.
